Combining a keen songwriting sense with a playful display of sonic influences, Alyssa Murray creates a satisfying juxtaposition of synth and song. The Kansas City based singer/songwriter, keyboardist, and producer takes after some of the very best art-pop mainstays, electronic wizards, and west coast beat makers. Alyssa has been featured on the Los Angeles based 'Beat Cinema' and was noted as one of KC's 90.9 The Bridge's favorite of EPs of 2021. She was selected to collaborate with visual-artist Barry Anderson for Charlotte Street and Eddie Moore's ProDo Lab Series and in 2022 was awarded a CFX Grant from the Creative Arkansas Community Hub and Exchange. Always feeling a strong pull towards songwriting, Alyssa studied piano, voice, and guitar in her teens deep diving into such influences as Fiona Apple and Stevie Wonder. Further pursuing her passion for jazz and improvisation, Alyssa moved to Kansas City to study jazz-piano at the UMKC Conservatory while immersing herself in the local music scene. Her 2015 debut ‘As of Now’ showcases her ability to combine elements of jazz with the narrative sophistication of contemporary-folk. In addition to performing, Alyssa is an experienced music educator and teaches 20+ private lessons a week covering subjects ranging from entry-level piano, ukulele, to jazz improvisation. She also has years of experience as a dance accompanist with the Kansas City Ballet's community-outreach program Reach Out And Dance and Owen/Cox Dance Group’s in-school program Take the Stage. Alyssa has a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and has studied under the direction of Bobby Watson and Dan Thomas; as well as classical repertoire with Karen Kushner and Diane Petrella.
I've been teaching piano for 15+ years and my students have gone on to confidently share music they know & love, casually & professionally. After the first few lessons, you'll be able to play songs you love, identify notes & chords, and begin reading music. As time goes on, you'll be able to write your own songs & even improvise! I have a degree in jazz studies with years of formal training in classical repertoire & technique, giving me a versatile edge as an instructor. Would love to start working with you whether you’re looking to get started or wanting to upgrade some already existing skills! All ages and experience levels welcome!
"Our son has made a ton of progress since he began learning piano with Alyssa about three years ago. She’s always been friendly, patient and flexible, especially with bouncing between virtual and in-person lessons during COVID times. Alyssa even found sheet music for video game themes our son liked, helping him learn those along with the book lessons. He really enjoyed learning music he was personally passionate about, and it definitely helped him stay enthusiastic and engaged. As our son put it, “she just makes it fun to play piano.”

“Alyssa is an amazing piano teacher! Piano had always intimidated me, and Alyssa helped guide me through both the theory and the practical use of voicing, chord movement, and progression structure. As an experienced guitarist and music teacher myself, I found her lessons to be constructive, informative, and inspiring! Highly recommended for piano, theory and songwriting!”
-Claire, professional singer-songwriter/guitarist
"My daughter has been happily taking classes with Ms. Alyssa for 3 years and we adore her. Alyssa has made sure the music pieces stay interesting and appeal to my daughter as she matures to keep her engaged. The progression my daughter has made is incredible and such a good foundation for any musical endeavors she might seek. Ms. Alyssa is communicative, flexible and a pure delight! "
-Jessi, daughter age 9
"I can't say enough good things about Alyssa's teaching. She sees the potential in every student and inspires them to be their best through her engaging and fun approach to lessons. My kids are learning and growing, and we couldn't be more happy and proud!"
